The Executive Director of the Foreign Service Academy (FSA), Sierra Leone, Ambassador Soulay Daramy, together with his Deputy, Ambassador Victoria Sulimani, attended the 71st Graduation Ceremony of the Gabriel L. Dennis Foreign Service Institute (FSI) in Monrovia, Liberia.
Ambassador Daramy, who described the event as an honour to attend, conveyed fraternal greetings from His Excellency Dr. Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, to His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, President of the Republic of Liberia.
He expressed appreciation to Ambassador Reginald B. Goodridge Sr., Director General of the Foreign Service Institute, for his warm reception since his arrival in Monrovia.
Quoting one of his professors during his diplomatic training, Ambassador Daramy remarked“An untrained diplomat is like a misguided missile — a loose cannon that can cause irreparable damage in unintended locations.”
He elaborated that a well-trained diplomat, on the other hand, acts with purpose in the interest of the sending state and for the greater global good.
“A well-trained Foreign Service Officer can be more effective at establishing lasting peace than battalions and tanks, or an air force with a thousand bomber jets,” he emphasized.
He further explained that a knowledgeable diplomat can attract much-needed investments, while a skilled diplomat ensures that their country remains visible in the right places at the right time.
Ambassador Daramy commended the Gabriel L. Dennis Foreign Service Institute for its significant contribution in shaping Liberia’s diplomatic landscape, noting that its work continues to strengthen Liberia’s presence on the global stage. He cited Liberia’s recent election to a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council as a testament to its growing international influence.
He also highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Sierra Leone and Liberia, emphasizing that the Foreign Service Academy of Sierra Leone was proud to have recently hosted a delegation from the Foreign Service Institute of Liberia.
“This is more than an event; it is a celebration of our shared dreams and aspirations to make meaningful contributions to the diplomatic landscape,” he stated.
Ambassador Daramy reaffirmed FSA’s commitment to forging a mutually beneficial partnership with the FSI, adding that such collaboration would further enhance the diplomatic capacities of both nations.
In conclusion, he congratulated the graduating diplomats on behalf of the Foreign Service Academy of Sierra Leone, expressing confidence that the skills and knowledge they acquired at the FSI would serve them well in their future careers.
“You have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on Liberia, the sub-region, and the global community,” he said
