Reflection on the Presidential Best Teachers Award 2025
On Saturday afternoon, the sun shone brightly over Makeni, but it was outshone only by the brilliance of our nationโ€™s finest teachers. On the eve of World Teachers Day, we gathered not just for an award ceremony, but for a powerful celebration of the heart and soul of our nationโ€™s future.
Thirteen pedagogical gladiators. Thirteen beacons of hope who had already conquered district and regional hurdles, standing tall on the national stage. The hall was filled with a palpable energy, not just for the prizes, but for the validation of a profession that builds all others.
I sat, with immense pride, as these exceptional educators showcased the innovation, dedication, and sheer brilliance that is thriving in our classrooms. From a starting field of the nationโ€™s finest, only six made it to the final, most grueling round. The anticipation was a dramatic crescendo to months of rigorous assessment.
And then, the moment of truth.
It is with a heart bursting with joy that our national champions were announced, the victors of the Presidential Best Teachers Award 2025: Mr. James Idriss Bangura and Mr. Hassan Turay, both from the Western Area Rural District.
These two titans of teaching have each earned their stellar reputation and a grand prize of NLe 60,000. But more than the cash, they have earned the everlasting gratitude of a nation. They represent the pinnacle of excellence we are nurturing across Sierra Leone.
This is not an isolated event. This is a strategic pillar of His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bioโ€™s vision for Free Quality Education. By elevating our teachers, we are elevating our children. By recognizing excellence in the light of day, we are inspiring a generation. By investing in these heroes, we are investing in the very infrastructure of our national development.
To every single contestant, from the first screening to the final six: You are all winners. You have shown Sierra Leone what true dedication looks like. You are the standard-bearers.
And to every teacher in every corner of our country, from the urban centers to the most remote villages: This award is for you. This recognition is for you. Your quiet sacrifices, your patient guidance, and your unwavering belief in our children are the true engines of change.
On this World Teachers Day, my message is clear: The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education and the Teaching Service Commission see you, we value you, and we are committed to advancing your training, recognition, and professional development. The journey continues, and together, we will build a Sierra Leone where every child is guaranteed a quality education by a valued, supported, and celebrated teacher.
Join me in celebrating our champions and every teacher shaping our tomorrow.
