On 3rd November 2025 along Wilkinson Road, in Freetown, Mr. Yada Williams Esq had a bitter argument with Traffic Warden personnel over the use of an unregistered vehicle that he was driving.
In his post on X on 4th November 2025, Mr Yada Williams said, โYesterday, along Wilkinson Road, a traffic warden identifying himself as Barrie stopped a vehicle accompanying mine and brazenly demanded Le250,000 as a bribe instead of issuing the lawful Le400,000 fine. This was despite informing him of my connection with the law. I immediately reported the matter to the Anti-Corruption Commissioner. This predatory conduct is a disgrace and has no place in public service. Rogue wardens who extort citizens must be removed. The public should not tolerate corruption in uniforms.โ
According to the Traffic Warden Mr. Alusine Barrie RSC 224 on the said date at Wilkinson Road, he pulled over an unregistered black Toyota Land Cruiser jeep which was plying the route without registration plates. He said when he engaged the driver who happened to be Mr.Yada Williams and explained to him why he pulled him over and that said he was going to clamp the vehicle. That was when an argument erupted between them which attracted some of his senior colleagues who later clamped the vehicle. โWe issued him a ticket for NLe400 for driving an unregistered vehicle with no number plates.โ Barrie said.
Barrie also said that Mr. Williams later paid for the ticket at GT Bank and his vehicle was released to him.
According to our sources, Mr. Williams called the ACC to complain about an act of corruption by the Traffic Warden, but after going through the records the ACC dropped the matter as all the documents presented to them were accurate and correct.
The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) has repeatedly issued public notices and press releases emphasizing that it is unlawful to drive an unregistered or unlicensed vehicle in Sierra Leone. Operating an unregistered vehicle is an offence under Section 5 (and Section 7) of the Road Traffic Act 2007 and can result in significant penalties.
