The award ceremony was held at the Senior Police Officersโ Mess, at Kingtom and attracted senior police officers, university officials, and other distinguished guests.
Welcoming attendees, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr Sahr Yomba Senesie, described the occasion as a historic moment that would โgo down in the annals of Sierra Leoneโ. He commended IGP Selluโs leadership as fearless, fair, and impactful, noting that his stewardship has positively influenced both the police force and society at large.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice Chancellor and Principal of Njala University, Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma, described the university as a โsacred, legislated and empowered institutionโ committed to knowledge creation, human capital development and public service since its establishment. He said the decision to honour IGP Sellu reflected the universityโs sense of institutional pride and national responsibility.

Professor Koroma explained that the award recognises IGP Selluโs exemplary public service, ethical leadership, and enduring contributions to national stability and democratic governance. He stressed that the recognition went beyond ceremony, noting that it affirmed core national values such as integrity, professionalism, discipline, accountability, respect for human dignity, and service to the common good.
He further stated that Njala University reserves such honours for individuals whose impact transcends institutional boundaries and strengthens the fabric of society. According to him, IGP Selluโs leadership of the Sierra Leone Police has enhanced peace, security, and institutional credibility, which are essential foundations for education, research, investment, and sustainable development.

The university orator subsequently read the citation before the presentation of the award. The citation noted that โMr Williams Fayia Sellu, Inspector General of Police of the Republic of Sierra Leone, is presented with an Honorary Award of Distinction in recognition of his exemplary service to national security, public order and institutional leadership within the Sierra Leone Police.โ
In his acceptance speech, IGP Sellu expressed deep gratitude and humility for the honour. He said he felt profoundly honoured by the recognition, adding that he was not the only alumnus of Njala University serving in the Sierra Leone Police. He disclosed that a committee had interviewed him prior to the final decision and described the ceremony as solemn and deeply touching.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Mrs Matilda Doris Sellu, President of the Police Wives Association and wife of the Inspector General of Police.
