This significant regional event, which took place on July 19, 2026, saw the gathering of West African leaders, international dignitaries, and global representatives, all under a strict security framework aimed at addressing transnational threats and ensuring democratic stability within the region.

The security strategy was divided into two primary locations: Freetown, the capital city, and the airport town of Lungi. From July 12 to 17, elite forces established a secure perimeter around the venue hosting the ECOWAS Administration and Finance Committee along with the Council of Ministers. Armed patrols, vehicle checkpoints, and stringent perimeter controls effectively transformed the Aberdeen peninsula into a fortified zone.

For the main summit on July 19, rigorous access control measures were enacted around the newly established facility. Armed forces, alongside specialized counter-terrorism units and tactical mobile teams, ensured the area was secure for the arriving heads of state.

In his role as the Chairman of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO), IGP Sellu activated the West Africa Police Information System (WAPIS). This digital framework enabled intelligence personnel to conduct real-time cross-border threat assessments and instantaneously cross-check regional criminal databases. The comprehensive security measures were pivotal in discouraging potential disturbances, allowing West African leaders to concentrate on advancing regional integration, enhancing economic trade, and upholding constitutional governance.
