Today the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Sierra Leone convened key Stakeholders to a planning meeting based on rumours of returning illegal migrants of different categories from the United States of America.
Addressing the meeting the Minister of Internal Affairs Rtd AIG Morie Lengor Esq, said the meeting was called, based on social media rumours and intelligence gathered that all other nations in the World should fully cooperate in accepting the deportation of their citizens illegally present in the United States.
Moving forward, the Minister said that the Immigration Department have been duly informed about the deportation of Sierra Leonean migrants, and some have gone through interviews of varrious sort. He furthered that the meeting was also to brainstorm on corrective measures that will lead to a unified roadmap to aid the arrival of the deportees in a professional and orderly manner.
Discussions from key Stakeholders revolved around Migration management and strengthening of coordination and cooperation structures to promote the safe and orderly arrival of the deportees.
Explaining the position of IOM, Madam Pauline Macharia, Officer in charge, IOM Office Sierra Leone said they are not more involved in deportation process, but they are always ready and willing to support and partner with the Government to aid the return of migrants. She noted that they remain committed in ensuring returnees have access to reintegration opportunities, both individually and at community level, so that they can rebuild their lives in their home Countries.
Madam Macharia requested for more information about the deportees, including the total number of male and female and their age brackets among others. She emphasised that they remain committed to addressing migration challenges and need driven solutions. She added that they look forward to deepening their cooperation and collaboration with the Government of Sierra Leone in tackling migration issues, in supporting the returnees upon arrival towards achieving social stability and psychosocial well-being.
Attendees at the meeting were key Representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Immigration Department, the Transnational Organized Crime, Ministry of Transport and Aviation, Ministry of Social Welfare among others, who shared positive thoughts on pertinent issues that were discussed in the meeting.
The meeting however concluded on decisions to hold subsequent engagement in preparation to receive the deportees.
