On Tuesday 23rd June 2026, in a grand ceremony that capped a three-day celebration for World Public Service Day 2026, the Sierra Leone government honored Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr. William Fayia Sellu for his exemplary leadership, integrity, and transformative impact within the institution. The national commemoration at the Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown drew a diverse audience of civil servants, diplomats, and development partners, all united in recognizing the achievements in public service.

In his keynote address on behalf of His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh emphasized the governmentโ€™s dedication to innovation within the public sector. He praised IGP Sellu as a shining example of commitment, highlighting his tireless efforts to evolve the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) from merely a โ€œForceโ€ into a modern, community-focused โ€œService.โ€

Since taking the helm, IGP Sellu has driven transformative reforms aimed at rebuilding public trust and enhancing law enforcement capabilities. Under his leadership, the SLP has reached significant milestones, including:

The recent opening of the first-ever Blood Bank and Dental Clinic at the Kingtom Police Hospital.

The establishment of a cutting-edge Forensic Laboratory at the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) Headquarters.

Revamping institutional discipline and implementing a unified uniform policy to enhance visibility and professionalism.

Maintaining critical collaborations with international organizations like the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to improve modern law enforcement systems.

Speaking to Tablet Newspapr, IGP Sellu expressed deep gratitude and dedicated the accolade to the dedicated officers of the SLP who tirelessly uphold national security and public order. โ€œEffective policing cannot exist in a vacuum; it thrives on robust collaboration between law enforcement and the communities we serve,โ€ Sellu noted. โ€œThis honor is for every officer guarding our streets and every citizen partnering with us to foster a safer, more transparent Sierra Leone.โ€

The World Public Service Day celebrations kicked off with a symbolic health walk from the Youyi Building to Aberdeen Beach and concluded on Tuesday with this prominent awards ceremony, honoring the champions of national development.
