On Wednesday, 28 May, 2025 the Speaker of Liberiaโs Parliament Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon and the Speaker of Sierra Leone Parliament Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas chart the way forward for the establishment of the Mano River Union Legislative Parliamentary Body.
In his short remarks to his Sierra Leonean counterpart, Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon, said he is very happy with the kind of hospitality accorded to them by the government and people of Sierra Leone.
He said he has had discussions with the Speaker of Ivory Coast and the Speaker of Togo who is the present Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament and they spoke lengthily about the establishment of the Mano River Union Legislative Parliamentary Body.
He further explained why they should form a parliamentary body as they are the peoplesโ representative and are closer to the people which will enhance quick response to our borders and other related issues.
He noted that the Mano River Union Parliamentary Body will be like the ECOWAS Parliament starting with a rotational system of its leadership.
He said the body will enhance swift and direct response on infrastructural development, enhance effective cross border trades, drugs related activities, trafficking and cross border military collaboration for a productive and peaceful co-existence in our sisterโs countries.
โMy purpose of this visit is to fast track the launch of this all important body by the Speakers of the four MRU countries, as the peoples representative we will quickly gather relevant information from our people and send it to the Executive arm of government for effective action.โ He concluded.
For His part Speaker of Sierra Leone Parliament Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas said he has being thinking of the same venture to have a small block of sister countries with same aims and objective as that of what Speaker Koon has highlighted, He said โI sometimes feel so bad when Serra Leone, Liberia and Guinea decide to support different candidates when it comes to voting on a bigger platform like ECOWAS and other issues, but with the setting up of such body, we will meet as Leaders and deliberate on any issue and come out with one voice as an effective neighbourhood body.โ
He concluded by saying that, he is in full support of his Liberian counterpartโs innovative ideas and hopes that other speakers will support the inactive actively.
