On June 1, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump formally nominated Daniel Travis, a seasoned diplomat, to serve as the next Ambassador of the United States to the Republic of Sierra Leone. The nomination now awaits confirmation from the U.S. Senate.
As the Senateโs approval is needed for this role, the U.S. Embassy in Freetown is currently led by Jared M. Yancey, who is serving as the Chargรฉ dโAffaires. He has been at the helm on an interim basis since September 18, 2025. Daniel Travis, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Counsellor, will take on the esteemed title of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary upon confirmation.
The position became vacant following the departure of the previous ambassador, Bryan David Hunt, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone from September 2023 until his resignation on September 17, 2025. Ambassador Hunt stepped down due to personal family medical considerations.
