MAKENI, Sierra Leone — A localized hunt is underway for a Sierra Leonean citizen, Ishmael Jah, who has gone into hiding after refusing to inherit the violent leadership mantle of a powerful local secret society.

The conflict erupted following the death of his uncle on July 8, 2025. The uncle served as the high-ranking chief priest for an influential chapter of the Poro society in Makeni, Northern Sierra Leone, before succumbing to cancer. The traditional succession line was instantly shattered because the priest left behind no direct male heirs; his only son, Amadu Jah, was reportedly murdered during a brutal bout of internal factional strife within the occult group.

As the eldest living male relative of the deceased priest’s brother, traditional custom designated Ishmael Jah as the immediate successor to assume the role of the chapter’s next spiritual leader and “Witch doctor.”

Jah has resolutely rejected the appointment. He publicly cited the extreme, ritualistic violence and illegal practices tied directly to the leadership post as his reasons for defiance.

According to local sources close to the situation, his refusal has triggered a severe backlash from society elders, who view the declination as a profound betrayal of ancient sacred laws. Jah has allegedly been issued a final ultimatum: accept the responsibility immediately or face a swift, deadly penalty.
