Under the leadership of President Bio, the Sierra Leone Police will soon receive 100 CCTV cameras from the Ministry of Communications to boost the ongoing installation of cameras in strategic locations in and out of the city.
This is part of IGP William Fayia Sellu’s innovative efforts to breathe new life into the long-dormant Smart City Project, which was initiated in 2014.
This initiative aims to install CCTV cameras in all major cities, with the pilot phase already underway in Freetown, where 40 cameras have been strategically placed, including the Mile 38 checkpoint.
“The donation of 100 CCTV cameras by President Bio has shown strong support for the project, which will facilitate the smooth implementation of the Smart City Project,” a senior police officer said.
The installation of cameras in and around the city will help the police to promptly and adequately respond and prevent crimes.
With the newly acquired drone corridor at the Police Headquarters, which is capable of gathering real-time photographs and data, it can also discharge tear gas canisters safely to neutralise riotous situations anywhere in the city before the arrival of police personnel.
The drones can also be in the air for several hours.
The successful reintroduction of customized handsets that rely on secure channels, rather than conventional mobile network operators, enables personnel to communicate situation reports without network interruptions in all regions of the country.
Meanwhile, Sierra Leone Legal Aid Board Executive Director Madam Fatmata Clair Carlton-Hanciles, who paid a courtesy visit to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr. William Fayia Sellu at police headquarters, praised IGP Sellu for his exemplary leadership and significant reform initiatives aimed at transforming the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).
She highlighted the strides made in enhancing discipline within the force, emphasizing the importance of such reforms for the effective functioning of the police.
“The SLP is our key partner,” Carlton-Hanciles stated, acknowledging that the success of the Legal Aid Board is closely tied to the strong support of the SLP.
She noted that the SLP has been performing admirably in its duties, she concluded.
